History of Lacrosse

Lacrosse is the oldest organized sport played in North America, with its origins in a tribal game played by indigenous people.

Lacrosse was started by Native Americans and was originally known as stickball.  Originally, the game had 100 to 1000 players on a field that was nearly two miles long!

Lacrosse balls were originally made of wood!  Ouch.  Later, they upgraded the ball using deer skin stuffed with fur.

The modern women's game was introduced in 1890 at St. Leonard's School in St. Andrews, Scotland.
